We were in Onuma earlier in the week.................
It was dark and raining (heavily) but there were still some birds about. We noticed a pair of Little Grebes on what appeared to be the foundations of their nest.
The female laid one egg but the nest was clearly unfinished, the egg just bobbed around in the water. The grebes then frantically tried to quickly build the nest up................

I'm not sure what led to this situation. Had they just abandoned another nest? Did the heavy rain damage or break this one?
The egg was surely in the cool water too long............
It started raining extremely heavily and we had to leave. I hope they finished the nest before the female decided to lay more eggs............

DeleteGreat sequence of photographs. I suspect that tragedies like this happen more frequently than we realize.
