North Hokkaido Summer 2017 #10
We found a different choice of background for Siberian Rubythroats..................
Not this one...........
The northern coast of Hokkaido is well-known for dairy farming. One family of Rubythroats had made its nest next to a field full of drying cow sh*t.
My wife dubbed them 'the cowsh*t family'.
Not many buttery smooth green backgrounds or blue skies here then.................
I got a few shots of the female.
Some females show a bit of red on the throat but not this one............
I guess living next to cowsh*t ensures a steady supply of insects at least...............
Can birds smell anyway? I don't think they can (except for some seabirds)..............
The male left the manure for a bit..............
And the female had the decency to pose in front of some green at the end...........

Beautiful, as ever. Actually the received wisdom that most birds can't smell is no longer thought to be true. But of course, if you ate flies, you might find the smell of faeces or rotting meat attractive, as it would mean you were in for a meal :)
ReplyDeleteIf they can smell this pair must have arrived late and all the best nesting sites were already taken........
