White-billed Diver

My first lifer of 2017.....................

This White-billed Diver was in one of the fishing harbours on the west coast.  I was trying (unsuccessfully) to photograph a fishing Osprey when I noticed a diver in the corner..............

A White-billed Diver, a pretty rare bird in Japan.

It looked exhausted, as all divers seem to be when they appear in the ports and harbours.

It came reasonably close in nice light.

It didn't pose much or do anything interesting. At least the water colour changed a bit as it slowly moved around................

I've seen all 4 diver species in Japan now. I've only ever seen Red-throated in the UK. If I can get a Great Northern Diver somewhere one day I'll have all the divers in the world..............

  1. Good find Stu. Can't imagine when I might next get a lifer (as a non-twitcher).

    1. I'm not a twitcher either (they don't really have them here) and I much prefer finding my own birds anyway.......

  2. Amazing find. Would have been a lifer for me too. It looks healthy from what one can tell from the pictures so perhaps it will have good hunting in the harbour and quickly regain its strength.

  3. A great find Stuart and just reward for the time you're in the field.

  4. Great find - I thought you might have to report a follow-up stampede of birders/photogs !

    1. AFAIK I was the only person to see it, the only birder anyway.
