Some more SMIFs
I spent another afternoon with the Smew on Monday.......................
They were constantly flying to and fro between the main lake and a small partially ice free pond. A bit challenging as they fly pretty quickly and the lighting was very variable.
I tried a few group shots.
My arms got a bit tired holding the 500mm lens.............
Here's a non BIF shot.
Sometimes my settings were all messed up.....................
It was another mild afternoon, spring is surely on the way..............................
Some more atmospheric ones...............
I hope they'll stick around for a bit but once the ice retreats they disperse all over the lake before they head north.
The drakes looked great in the afternoon light............

I think the next time I visit Asia I will have to include Hokkaido!
ReplyDeleteAnd so you should............
DeleteI've never seen a Smew in flight. One of those species like Coot and Little Grebe that are seemingly flightless, at least in the UK. Great BIFs Stu. Not many folk have pics like those.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil. Come to think of it the only Smews I've seen in Europe (in the UK and Germany) didn't fly either............
DeleteI've never seen Smew flying either - in South China I think they must get about on the railways.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I'm the only person that seems to see flying Smew!
