Monochrome weekend
It was a grey and rather overcast weekend..............
The Falcated Duck was the most interesting bird at Onuma but had gone by Monday. There were 3 or 4 Smew there though................
I had the teleconverter on for both the Falcated Ducks and Smew......................a bit of a challenge when bigger birds came near, like Whooper Swan and the long staying Vega (?) Gull.
Not much colour around..................
Other duck species included Goldeneye.................
There were also 3 Little Grebe................
And this Great Egret....................
Other stuff at Onuma included a pair of White-tailed Eagle feeding on some wildfowl or other on the lake on Monday morning (I hope it wasn't the Falcated Ducks!) and also a flock of Siskin..................

Some most appealing ones there. I hadn't realised that Smews were smaller than Mallards.
ReplyDeleteThey're tiny actually.........
DeleteThose are ace for a grey day. Yes, interesting size comparison with Smew and Mallard. Smew would be nice here, better a male but they rareley are.
ReplyDeleteOnly ever saw one in the UK and yes it was a female.............
DeleteI can barely imagine Smew and Falcated Duck in the same weekend. Both would be incredibily rare here. I have never seen a Falcated Duck and the only Smew I have ever seen was an immature male in Oshawa, ON a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteAround here Smew are pretty regular winter visitors, Falcated a bit less common but not so rare..........
