Another Sunday with the eagles #1
The weather was still very mild on Sunday so I had another chance with the eagles at Yakumo...............
There seemed to be far fewer of them than a few days previously and at first photo opps were few and far between, here's a heavily backlit Stellers inland..............
We went back to the main bridge again to see if anything turned up. There were a few eagles around but they were mostly too far off to photograph. It seems the numbers of salmon carcasses are shrinking.................and the eagles are more spread out.
There were a few other species around of course. Whooper Swan, Peregrine, Buzzard and various common wildfowl including a few Smew.
And some rather scruffy looking Great Egret.
We waited a couple of hours and I noticed a Slaty Backed Gull had found itself a salmon............
I was sure an eagle or two would come and get it but they all seemed too far away to even notice it. We waited a while longer. The friend who I was with gave up and went home. I reckoned the light was so good I'd give it until the sun went down and the salmon would be in shade.
I didn't have to wait long. Only 5 minutes after my friend had left a White-tailed Eagle spotted the salmon...................
After binning a lot of shots from the week before I had decided to leave the teleconverter off as I wanted some extra 'space' for squabbling landing eagles, however after seeing there was not much about I had put it back on trying to photograph the Smew. Big mistake................
Aaaarrgggh! Wings clipped off..............3 out of these 4 are uncropped.
I never learn.............
As you can see good light is almost everything in bird photography..............

Thanks for the Smew! Great shots of the White-tailed Eagle. It's so annoying when you clip the wings, isn't it!
ReplyDeleteYes it is!!!
DeleteWhite-tailed Eagles and a Smew.....the stuff of dreams for a North American birder.
ReplyDeleteI could say the same about Bald Eagle and Hooded Merganser..........!
