Some later winter miscellany

We visited the ports north of Yakumo hoping to find some Long-tailed Ducks............

No luck there: the ports seemed pretty quiet. A few Black Scoter, the inevitable Goldeneye and Csap plus a few Wigeon. No grebes or divers anywhere.

There were lots of Glaucous Gulls in various stages of plumage.............

And Glaucous-winged Gulls too.............

The local ports and beaches are probably a great place for those with an major interest in/knowledge of the finer points gull ID. Sadly that person is not really me.

Late winter is also the time to see roadside eagles, like this immature White-tailed Eagle...............

There were still 2 or 3 Stellers at Yakumo and more White-taileds dotted around the coast but most eagles seem to have left by now.....................

Not much else around. A few Whooper Swan, a flock of Dunlin their usual winter port, Great Egret.................

  1. I am astounded at the pile of shells in the second Glaucous Gull image.

    1. It's in the corner of a fishing port. the fishermen harvest scallops offshore which are then processed in the port and the shells discarded............
