Harlequins

A quiet Sunday saw us east of Hakodate............

I got lucky with a group of 3 Harlequin Ducks in a port near Esan..............

As always when I try and photograph this species the highlights get blown............

In the same place were several Black Necked Grebe.................

There were several Common Buzzard around, the pale east Asian (sub?)species............

Also around were Buff Bellied Pipit, Sparrowhawk and both species of eagle. Kamiiso and Onuma were very quiet although the Falcated Ducks were still present.

I just heard some interesting news of some potentially interesting arrivals in the area, hopefully I can a) find them if they are still present and b) post some photos...............

  1. Hi Stu. The buzzards are Buteo buteo japonicus also known as Eastern Buzzard. Although they're fairly common I like them a lot. They're different to an Australian raptors. You got some splendid pics of the Harlequins despite their contrasty appearance. Beautiful aren't they?
