Wood Sandpipers
A windy (from the wrong direction) Sunday afternoon was pretty quiet birdwise..............
There were Wood Sandpipers in several locations though.
This is common in freshwater habitats and most of these shots are in the muddy irrigated farmland just outside Hakodate.
I only ever saw one in the UK and that was just about 30 years ago, a juvenile at Marshside in August 1986.
There were 2 groups of 4.
They were also at Yakumo and this one was at Onuma............
A female Garaganey was in among the Teal and Shoveler at Yakumo, Glaucous Gull and Gadwall were at Kamiiso. Other stuff around included Eastern Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Great Egret, Oriental Cuckoo, Brown and Japanese Thrush....................

ReplyDeleteActually Russell, I'd expect Your part of Japan probably has some really good wader spots.......
DeleteNice subtle-looking waders....I saw a photo the other day of one nesting in a tall tree in arctic europe.
ReplyDeleteThabks John, it would be weird to see them in their summering grounds..............
DeleteNot a bird we get here.....you always seem to have great nostalgia about the UK. Do I detect that or is it my imagination? Why do I have the feeling that you would go back there in a heartbeat?
ReplyDeleteAs I get older I have a lot of mostalgia for many things. Part of me would love yo live in the UK again but I know 2 things.........I'm too old to get a decent job there and the grass is always greener..............
DeleteI saw my first one of these this summer! There was a little influx across the country, I think. But it was very, very distant - your shots are excellent, as always :)
ReplyDeleteOnly ever saw one in the UK, 30 years ago this week actually............
