The first signs of spring..............

The Black Necked Grebes are still in Kamiiso and one or two are starting to change into summer plumage as you can see..........................

Although most were still wholly in their winter plumage...............

Other stuff in Kamiiso included Great Egret, various common winter ducks including Black Scoter plus a small flock of Great Crested Grebe offshore (one of which seemed to be in full summer pluamge).

I've been keeping my eye out for Waxwings and/or Crossbills in town but nothing doing there: just Great Egret on the river and nothing else of note.

It's been a very mild winter in Hakodate, only a handful of really cold days and comparitively little snow. It was a very mild (even cool) summer last year too. What's going on? Is Hakodate turning into an oriental version of Preston?

  1. These grebes are so beautiful and good to know spring will soon be here. My little daffy are blooming.

    1. No daffodils here for a few weeks at least: mild winter or not.

  2. It must be great to see some signs of spring starting, even if you have a while to wait for flowers. We've had a cool summer in Melbourne too.

  3. Spring indeed. Some winters we get one or two Black-necked Grebes...not this one, it seems.
