A grey Sunday in late February

Well you can see how the White Tailed Eagle got its name.

A grey Sunday saw us head west. We almost never go that direction in winter as there is usually too much snow but 2015 has been very mild. My wife also wanted to go to an oyster festival in the tny town of Shireuchi. I'd assumed this would be a low key event: a few stalls selling fried oysters in a car park. But no. There were thousands of people there (well 2 or 3000 maybe)................

The oysters weren't even especially cheap (though very tasty).

Another low key birding day, no decent photos at all really. I've hardly seen any Brent Geese on our side of the peninsular this winter but there were a lot over there............

Bad lighting plus I've never been much good with 'flock' shots.

There were lots of Great Egret at Kikonai.

When I was taking the egret picture a police car with 3 policemen pulled up and asked my wife who I was and what I was doing and then when I came back they asked to see my ID. They must have been really bored today or high on oyesters or something.

Not much else about. Some White Tailed Eagles here and there, Whooper Swan in various locales, the usual wildfowl and gulls, a flock of Waxwing (probably Bohemian)..........................

    1. I honestly don't know what they were thinking........................a man with a camera/big lens pointing it at a big white bird: what else could he possibly be doing?

Oh wait, I'm a foreigner. I must be up to no good then.

    2. How long do you have to live there not to be a foreigner?

    3. Because of Japanese ideas of nationhood and ethnicity I will always be a foreigner, even if I gave up my UK passport, started speaking fluent Japanese and became a Japanese citizen...............

  2. Lovely Brent's shown here in this post Stuart. Its a pity a birdwatcher gets hassled for taking pictures. Surely they must have had something better to do that day

  3. Too bad you were harassed by those bold policemen doing their work to keep Japan safe. Take a trip down to the US/Mexican border these days and you'll really experience harassment from the big, brave borders guards.

    1. 'Harassed' is perhaps too strong a word, at least they were polite............if annoying.
