Eagles at 700 #5
The last of my eagle photos taken in Yakumo a few days ago...............
The much fought over salmon was unsportingly carried off by a White Tailed Eagle. The others just stood around looking confused..............
All shots taken handheld at 700mm. My arms were a little tired by the end...............
The birdwatching tour group which had surprised us later went to the river mouth and flushed several eagles which flew straight towards the bridge where we were standing. the last eagle action was BIFing.
Sometimes it was hard to fit them in the frame, these following 3 shots (and the top one) are uncropped.
Immatures of both species seemed to fly much closer to us than the adults did.
But here's an adult Stellers at least..............
The bird which got another birder on the bridge excited was a lone Lapwing (the same species as in the UK). It is not common in Hokkaido and he ignored the eagles in a vain attempt to get a photo of it..................
The usual common wildfowl was around, and a Long Billed Plover too.

I am not surprised your arms are tired. These images are absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret, these are the last of last week's shots. Fun to photograph but a lot of work on the PC afterwards!
DeleteExcellent composition on the uncropped BIFs. I also liked the confused looks of the birds after "their" salmon was stolen! You must have ben in seventh heaven all day! Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks Wilma. Yes days like this are the reason we get out of of bed on our days off!
DeleteOh and it wasn't so much excellent composition as completely random good luck, over half that burst had clipped wings of varying degrees.............
DeleteLooks like the newer kit is giving you better photo opportunities in the less-than-perfect weather..from here in south China, it all says "Wintery" with a capital "W".
ReplyDeleteHere people would say winter 2014/15 is mild with a capital M!
