Wintry
Well winter was late starting but it sure snowed a lot today........................
At Yakumo there were lots of eagles but the nasty weather restricted photo opps, the AF of the new 7D is pretty good but if there is a blizzard there isn't much it can do..............
Other stuff at Yakumo included a Northern Lapwing (rare in Hokkaido) and this White Backed Woodpecker I noticed out of the corner of my eye whilst trying unsuccessfully to sneak up on some eagles feeding in the river.............
Earlier in the day in Mori there were Crossbill, Hawfinch and Japanese Waxwing in the park. None of them were easy to photograph, the waxwings were high up in the trees: these are heavy crops.
Not much on the sea, here's a Brent Goose also at Mori. These seem to have stopped coming to their regular wintering place in Hakodate................
At Onuma yesterday there were 4 White Tailed Eagle and a Bean Goose in among the swans.
Thanks to Hideki Kato for the driving this morning. We checked Sawara for the Gyrfalcon but it looks like it may not be coming back this year.................but we live in hope.

ReplyDeleteHi Margaret, there'll be lots more snow in the coming weeks................
DeleteFinally, a "proper" winter backdrop for the raptors and supporting cast ! I'm looking forward to seeing more...
ReplyDeleteHi John, well snow is forecast for the next seven days running....................
ReplyDeleteI do like the subtle, rich colour of the Bean Goose, a species I haven't seen .... yet. It seems as if you'll have a white Christmas. I'm also glad to hear the good report of the 7Ds effective autofocus as my husband just decided to order one for me.
ReplyDeleteHi, I hope you enjoy the new camera. It's a Brent Goose though. We'll definitely get a white christmas this year I think..............
DeleteYour text says Bean Goose so I'll try to modify my memory!
