Some early summer birds
The weather has been very warm and sunny the last few days...............
Most of the common summer visitors are here now. On the west coast I saw my first Rhinoceros Auklets and Lesser Cuckoos of the year as well as lots of Chestnut-eared Buntings.............
Otherwise pretty quiet: Osprey, a couple of Great Egret, a lone Intermediate Egret but not much else.
At Yakumo the usual species were present including Black-browed Reed Warbler.............
Other stuff at Yakumo included Reed Bunting, Osprey, White-tailed Eagle, Eastern Marsh Harrier and Siberian Stonechat (there seem to be far fewer of this species this summer) and at Oshamanbe there was another Harrier and a pair of White-winged Scoter offshore.
At Onuma Great-crested Grebes have started breeding in recent years................

A nice selection of species, many of which would be exotic here of course. It’s great to have the Grest Crested Grebes breeding. To witness the courtship display is one of nature’s highlights.
ReplyDeleteI think breeding in Hokkaido maybe a slightly new thing too..........
