An Ancient Murrelet
I was surprised to find an Ancient Murrelet in one of the ports to the north of town today...............
It looked pretty scruffy..................
And tired................
Not a bird I see often and usually in late winter when I do................
Is it a young bird perhaps?
It didn't look in tip-top condition but it was faring a lot better than some others...............
One of three Laysan Albatross corpses on the beach near Yakumo. I guess they died at sea during last week's typhoon and washed ashore. Still, 3 in the same place?

Amazingly, the only Ancient Murrelet I have ever seen was on the Lake Ontario around thirty years ago. How it found its way there is anyone's guess.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like it was extremely lost..............
DeleteThat murrelet looks like I feel on this Monday morning. No typhoons here thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it had a heavy weekend......
DeleteHello Stuart!:) I have tried to post a comment here before, but it was not accepted. It's a unique looking bird. Could the Ancient Murrelet have also been caught in the typhoon and survived, perhaps the reason for it's disheveled appearance and tiredness. I know it doesn't seem likely, but I would like to think it did.:)
ReplyDeleteI think it looks scruffy because it's moulting maybe?
DeleteMust have been rough typhoons if even the Albatrosses didn't make it.
ReplyDeleteOr they have eaten too much plastic floating in the ocean........
