A Black Faced Spoonbill at Kamiiso 2 years ago today.
This is a rare east Asian endemic with less than 3000 individuals in the wild. They can be seen in south Japan, Hong Kong and various other locales but are pretty rare this far north. I've also seen one at Yakumo.
This one was present about a week and on one of the days it was feeding on the beach and i could get reasonably close to it.
Wonderful to see this bird and that forst flight shot is fabulous
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Margaret..............
DeleteA nice looking spoonbill. And it's doing something other than standing around. Nice BIF that shows the brown wing tips.
ReplyDeleteHi Phil, it is a young bird hence the dark wingtipsand yes it was surprisingly active this one.................
DeleteIt's always a source of great pleasure to see a rare bird, and this one is about as rare as it gets. I have seen several species of spoonbill around the world but I doubt that I will ever encounter this one. Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteIf you ever make it over to Korea, Hong Kong or southern Japan you may see one................
