Swallows in the Sakura

A very nice spring afternoon saw me in Goryokaku Park..............

Not many birds about but as you can see the cherry blossoms aren't so far off opening.............and by the looks of it they'll open a couple of weeks earlier than usual.

I saw my first Common Sandpiper of the year...............

There were lots of Barn Swallows around. Unusually for Japan there are no overhead cables in the park so they had to perch in the trees or on the ground...............

Hawfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, White Wagtail, Eastern Great Tit, Oriental Greenfinch and Dusky Thrush were the only other birds around................a quiet day all round.

  1. That first Sandpiper image is really lovely. It must be great to see the signs of spring after the snowy winter.

  4. Nice to see sunshine up there....I wonder if some of HK's wintering Common Sands find their way up to Hokkaido.

    1. I posted a few days ago, apparently it was ringed by a Russian birder in Kamchatka who puts the coloured flags the wrong way round!
