Black Throated Diver

We headed west to Esashi yesterday afternoon to see if the strong winds had bown anything interesting to our little corner of Hokkaido.

They hadn't unfortunately.

A small island just offshore (joined by a causeway) always looked like a likely spot for migrants but despite the winds there was nothing much about. Sakhalin Leaf Warbler, Red Flanked Bluetail, Rustic Bunting, Daurian Redstart and Dusky Thrush only................and none of them even posing for the camera.

A nearby port held this Black throated Diver however.

It looked pretty exhausted: it must have had a tough time on the open seas in such strong winds.

Shame it was still in winter plumage..............

This female Blue Rock Thrush was in the same harbour...............
