One good tern.................
Another typhoon hit Japan this weekend.................
But nothing dramatic in Hakodate except dark skies yesterday and rain today.
This immature Common Tern was just outside town yesterday..............
Terns of any species are scarce in Hokkaido. Every time they turn up the weather is also lousy too.
Still, always nice to see one................
The last time I saw this species was two and a half years ago in Preston Docks............
There were also about 100 or so Black-headed Gulls and this Glaucous-winged Gull snacking on some salmon..............
Other stuff around included a small flock of Wigeon and several Great Egret. In town last week there was a Red-flanked Bluetail near my flat as well as a surprise (flyover) Daurian Jackdaw, a couple of Peregrine and Great Egret.
At Onuma the common woodland species were in evidence but it was way too dark for any photos. At Sawra there were Harlequin Duck and a lot of Scaup and this 'Tamiyr' Gull...........a 'species' which we aren't allowed to 'tick'.
Still raining outside............

Glad to hear that the typhoon didn't cause you too much grief. As you point out, bad weather for humans, often means good birding in the aftermath.
ReplyDeleteJust a lot of rain up here, that's all..............
DeleteThat is quite a list of goodies Stu. Not quite typhoons here, just some after storm You wouldn't like it now.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a lot of them around this year. Storms I mean..........
