Pacific Diver
I had an unexpected free morning and we headed out east of town where I found a Pacific Diver.................
It was a mild but windy day, spring is getting closer. The Diver looked injured (or was it moulting?).
It is very similar to the Black Throated Diver but there is no white patch on its flanks and it has that small 'collar'. Black Throateds seem much more numerous in south Hokkaido so it was nice to see this one, a shame its wing appeared to be damaged.
It was swimming/diving OK though and looked healthy enough..............

Good shots. Probably going into its breeding plumage.
ReplyDeleteHope its summer wing recovers!
DeleteLooks healthy enough in the picture but a still photograph doesn't reveal its movements.
ReplyDeleteWhen it flapped its wings it didn't look so good, but maybe just moulting flight feathers though rather than a broken wing?
DeleteGreat pics. I hope it's ok. I envy a free morning. Like spring here now but the forecast for the weekend is rain. The only time I get off.
ReplyDeleteLike spring here too today, i'm sure the rain will come in a couple of days when i'm not working though..............
DeletePacific Diver is a good find......I hope the weather stays good on your NEXT day off, too!
