Roadblock
One of the people I teach (not a birder) showed me a picture of some birds he'd taken on his iphone a couple of weeks ago. He wanted to know what they were. They were Hazel Grouse of various ages................!
This is a species I've never seen. He said there were about 30 of them and he gave me detailed directions of how to find them. It involved driving deep into the forested mountains on gravel roads. So off we went a couple of days ago to try and find them.................only to find the road was blocked and closed for the next 2 weeks.
Damn. So we went to one of the Japanese Green Pigeon places instead.
Several years ago another of my students showed me a picture of a bird she'd taken on the roof of her shop. A Long Eared Owl! Another one missing from my Japanese list................

The pigeon looks splendid with that washed out background and the rock is a nice stage. I haven't see one of these yet but have heard of their remains lying beneath the local peregrine site.
ReplyDeleteHi Russell, I'm sure theer are coastal sites nearby where you live where you can watch them fly down to get their daily salt fix..........
DeleteStill, nice JGPs… hope to see the Hazel Grouse in due course.
ReplyDeleteHi John, I hope so too...............
DeleteShame about the road being blocked, but you got some beautiful Japanese Green Pigeon shots, it's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLaughed when I read your comment on my lizard post! I remember those 50's films!:)
I can laugh now but I was scared back then...........................
DeleteDon't you just love it when Joe Blogs finds a goody? What is the Japan equivalent of Joe Bloggs? Lovely pigeon pics Stu.
ReplyDeleteThat would probably be 'Taro Suzuki' or something like that....................
DeleteWow.... now I should expect for some breathtaking photos of Hazel Grouses in the next 2 weeks! Great photos of the pigeons as usual.
ReplyDeleteHi Ayuwat, I think I may have missed my chance this year....................
