Waderless

Typhoons, workload and various minor health ailments have kept me off the beaches this August more than I would have liked.................

But I still managed several visits to the local beaches and there have hardly been any waders anywhere. Other Hokkaido blogs seem to be seeing them but in the SW waders are very thin on the ground. Again. The numbers seem to be very low the last 2 or 3 years. Why, I have no idea.

These photos were all taken on the local beaches between 2008 and 2012 in the last 2 weeks of August...................

The top one is a Long Toed Stint. The next 3 are Long Billed Dowitcher (the only scarce one here), Whimbrel and Red Knot.

And these are Dunlin, Mongolian Plover, Ruff and Great Knot.

Hopefully August 2016 can buck the recent trend................

  3. Traditionally a fine time of the year for waders, obviously..pity about this year, but these are great images of great birds. I like the Dowitcher best, but as I've said before, I'm a bit of a "speciesist" !
