A short autumnal trip

A Black Legged Kittiwake, one of 7 Gull species at Yakumo this afternoon at end of a short trip away...........

We passed through Mukawa twice. There were 3 Japanese Crane in the middle of the grassland.............too far away for any decent shots though.

There was a flock of Black Scoter offshore and one sick or injured bird in the nearby harbour................

Also at Mukawa were White Tailed Eagle but not much else..............

At Utonai-ko there were big flocks of swans and geese. The swans seemed to be mainly Bewicks...........

And the geese mainly White Fronted.........................

Also at Utonai-ko were Black Necked Grebe, Great Egret, Whooper Swan, Bean Goose and a few common ducks. In central Hokkaido near our log cabin we saw more White Tailed Eagle as well as Eye Browed Thrush and White Backed Woodpecker. At Yakumo there were Great Crested Grebe, Dunlin and various common ducks.

Very quiet in Hakodate, I was busy with work or down with a nasty cold. Siberian Rubythroat was the most interesting migrant near my flat, otherwise just common stuff such as Night Heron, Great Egret, Kingfisher and the suchlike. And no photos of anything...........

  1. It looks like an enjoyable outing despite the lack of anything unusual, and the weather still looks reasonable. I hope you're over the cold - they're depressing and make people feel miserable!

  3. We have about 40,000 pinkies to swap for a few white-fronts Stu. Lots of Whoopers too and I've not heard of any Bewick's yet.
