A confused grebe

We went back to one of the local ports to check the Black-necked Grebes.............

There was only one present but it was clearly coming into breeding plumage. It obviously didn't read the memo that it is still the middle of January.................

It was the only one in the port: maybe the rest of them were freaked out by its individualistic approach to seasonal plumage.

Just outside town there was a river with a few live salmon and I was surprised to see 3 or 4 White-tailed Eagle there..................

Also around were Goosander, Red-breasted Merganser, Goldeneye, Scaup, Black Scoter, Harlequin Duck, Peregrine, Great Egret, Whooper Swan, Brown Dipper and a big flock of Brambling..............

  1. Your grebe is a great find. It's pretty rare on this part of the continent, but it does show up from time to time, rarely in breeding plumage, however.

  2. Sounds like a good bunch of birds.
We're a month away from Lunar New Year - the Cantonese spring starts then, but Asian Koels are calling early as I type.
Perhaps the BN Grebe is trying to get a head start...
