A grey Sunday in late autumn

A Eurasian Starling to the north of town this morning..............

I headed north in the hope of seeing some eagles. There were 4 White-tailed Eagles but the weather was too gloomy for any photos. There was snow on the mountain tops.............winter will be here very soon.

There were 5 Starlings in all. Only the 3rd time I've seen them in Japan. A bit difficult to get excited about though as I grew up watching hordes of them squawk and squabble on my parents' lawn.

Lots of swans were on the move. There were big flocks of Whoopers at both Yakumo and Oshamanbe.

And a few Bewicks at Yakumo too...........

There were 8 White-fronted Geese at Yakumo and 7 Bean Geese at Oshamanbe. Here are some BIFs of the latter.

Lots of Glaucous Gulls on the coast now..............

Other stuff around included 5 Dunlin at Yakumo, Goshawk, lots of Jays, Great-crested Grebe and the usual common wildfowl...............

  1. We sometimes forget that birds that are commonplace to us may be rare elsewhere.

    1. This species is a prime example of that rule..............
