A quiet Thursday in October

I took a quick walk this lunchtime............

The weather has been very nice this week after another typhoon rained off last Monday.

5 Black-crowned Night Herons were on the river skulking in the thinning vegetation..............

There were quite a few birds passing through including Red-flanked Bluetail, Bullheaded Shrike, Long-tailed Rosefinch and Black-faced Bunting. Other stuff around included a lone Kingfisher and the first Daurian Redstart of the year (a male).

Yesterday a Great Egret was fishing on the river.....................

A lot of effort for a tiny fish............

  1. I wish the next one to invade the UK were Night Heron. Greed of course. We have gained Little, Great and Cattle.

In answer to your question. The Sparrowhawk, and indeed most that we catch are simply doing what they do best, following the natural contours of a hedge in and out, up and down, flying through gaps in woodland or scrub. Just where we put nets to catch most birds. That's what happened today. It was on its own in the bottom of the net until we came along to retrieve it. Not without a tussle!

  2. It's interesting that we are both seeing Black-crowned Night Herons at different ends of the world.

    1. Despite the vastness of the Pacific Ocean separating us we do seem to have many of the same birds.........
