North Hokkaido Summer 2017 #1

We spent a few days up on the Ohotsuku coast in north Hokkaido last week..........

We've been there each of the last 4 summers...........

We drove through the night and arrived in the morning in the mist and drizzle.

The area has a lot of coastal grasslands. a habitat particularly good for Siberian Rubythroats, surely the most beautiful summer migrant.

We only see this on passage down in south Hokkaido and even when we do find one they skulk on migration. No skulking up here though.

They were busy finding food for nestlings..........

They picked up worms just like Blackbirds on garden lawns in the UK...............

There were other species around of course including Common Reed Bunting..............

  1. Siberian Rubythroats winter in small numbers in Taiwan and I had really hoped to see one whenI was there last February, but it was not to be. Maybe one day...........

    1. Thanks Neil. The northern coast is very pleasant.........it reminds me a little of some parts of rural England with all the quiet roads, rolling fields and dairy farms.
