A Black Woodpecker

A female Black Woodpecker in Onuma yesterday................

It was by the side of the road but a combination of its long body shape, twigs in the way an constant moving around made it a little tricky yo photograph. This burst seemed to be the best..........

They aren't shy at all but this kind of close encounter is quite rare.....maybe once a year if I'm lucky.

  1. I have tried several times to find this species, so far without success. I will try again later this year in Slovenia and Croatia.

    1. I've seen them in southern Germany. They are apparently increasing in numbers in central Europe so you have a decent chance........

  2. Saw one in Poland a few years ago but not crippling views like this - you must be chuffed
