Spring cliches and a rarity

We were on the west coast on Monday morning...............

On the way I noticed a Shelduck on the coast, a new bird for my Japanese list. I could only snap a record shot (above) as it swam away never to be seen again (by me at least). Like the Starling a couple of weeks ago not a bird I can get excited about after seeing so many of them growing up in the UK but still a very nice find.

We ended up in a well known park on the west coast where the cgherry blossoms are beginning to bloom. If you follow many Japanese birding blogs photos of Japanese White-eyes in the blossoms is a bit of a spring thing here..................

There were loads of them everywhere...............some of them not even in the blossoms.

But 99% of the time they were feeding in the flowers............

They are only summer visitors to Hokkaido and one of the commnest passage migrants in late April..................

I was hoping to see a few more migrants species but couldn't find any in the park, only a few Red Cheeked Starlings, , Black Faced Butings and lots of singing Japanese Bush Warblers.

  1. Nice pics of the white-eyes Stu, and you seem to find something rare very week. I tried some bird-in-blossom pics but failed to get any keepers. I do appreciate the arrival of colour here after ice-age long winters.

  4. White-eyes are such attractive little birds under any conditions, and the cherry blossom sure does nothing to diminish this. Very appealing shot.
