Black Woodpecker

A male Black Woodpecker to the east of Onuma this afternoon.

It was right next to the road but difficult to photograph as it was in the shade and/or behind twigs. The female was also nearby. They were househunting...............it must be spring.

The coast was pretty birdless except for a few common species in the harbours. At Onuma there were White Tailed Eagle and Smew but both too far off for any pictures.

    1. Thanks Dave. I've seen the grand total of one Smew (on a reservoir in East Lancs in 1987) and one White Tailed Eagle (from a boat trip in NW Scotland in 1985) in the UK...............but now they're just normal winter stuff here in Hokkaido in winter.

  4. What a cool bird and great shot. Thanks for leaving comments on my blog. I just thought no-one was interested. It's been dying slowly the last couple of years. After your advice I changed back from Google Comments back to the old form. It means I have lost all my comments for the last year or so. I also seem to get lots of spam visits from Russia and the Ukraine. I must get out with the birds this weekend.

    1. Hi Russell, in the settings you can configure it so that only certain people can use it, there are various levels. I selected the 'registered users' one and I hardly ever get spam. Sorry you lost all your comments. I have to say Google+ (google plus, where you had those lost comments) is a bit of a mess, it seems very confusing as does google photos which is also all over the place. They know how to do search engines/maps/blogs pretty well but some of their other services are awful.
