Another Winter morning in Onuma

A Long Tailed Tit and a Eurasian Jay...............

Monday morning was spent in Onuma again..............

There were a lot of common birds about including a flock of Long Tailed Tits.......................

This is the ultra cute Hokkaido race...................

These are so tricky to photograph, they were in a mixed species flock that included several Goldcrest which were even harder.

The resident woodpeckers were pretty active, here's a White Backed and a Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker (both females)...................

The Falcated Ducks were still around but out of camera range again. Hawfinch, Siskin, White Tailed Eagle, Whooper Swan too..................the usual winter stuff but nothing of real note.

  1. Those lottis are so different that I'm surprised the "experts" haven't decided to make them an entirely different species.

    1. I'm sure 'Siberian/Eastern/Japanese Long Tailed Tit' or somesuch will be on my list in the next 10 years..............(Siberian) Nuthatch, (Eastern) Great Tit and (Eastern) Buzzard have been some of many armchair ticks courtesy of the experts...........

  2. Is anything more delightful than those Long-tailed Tits - quite unlike anything that I have ever seen. Has any thought been given by taxonomists about elevating them to unique species status?

    1. There is a race in northern Europe that is very similar to the one in Hokkaido (it may even be the same actually) and even in Japan there are 2 or 3 other subspecies/races with more variants in the rest of Eurasia............
