A grey Monday morning..............

A Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker in Hakodate this morning...............

And some squabbling gulls in Yakumo this afternoon.............

A very dark day, we started off in one lf the local parks where my wife wanted to photograph some Red Squirrels. I was using my old 7D and 100-400 combo, a struggle in such dark conditions............

Lots of common autumn birds around including Dusky Thrush, Red Flanked Bluetail and Jay as well as a few woodpeckers..............

Up in Yakumo the gulls were feeding on salmon carcasses at the mouth of thr river................

Although they are common winter visitors I still love seeing Glaucous Gulls............

This individual wasn't taking any s**t from the resident Slatybackeds..............

There were quite a few around including some younger birds............

8 gull species including about 60 or so Black Legged Kittiwakes...............

None with red legs I'm afraid.

And upstream the first od the winter's Stellers Sea Eagles had arrived, 2 adults.....................here's a crapper than crap record shot of one in the distance.

1 adult White Tailed Eagle too. I probably won't make it up to Yakumo next weekend, in 2 weeks when I go next many more will hopefully have arrived and be a bit closer................

  2. Hello Stuart!:) What great sightings of so many different species of gulls, and superb shots of them, and ofcourse the fabulous images and close portraits of the Pigmy Woodpecker, which I have seen and admired on your blog before. Just lovely shots of everything.:)

  3. It's amazing how spoilt modern digital make us. You said it was a struggle with your old camera in poor light but your shots are still stunning. You've already got better pics of a Stellers eagle than I'll achieve this Winter.

  5. It's quite a contrast between the delicacy of the Pygmy Woodpecker and the bulk of the gulls.

    1. Actually I would be very interested to see some Pygmy Gulls, maybe a couple of million years of evolution may produce some...........or perhaps a Giant Woodpecker................
