A quiet midsummer

A very quiet midsummer weekend, I did nothing on the 21st and today (Monday 22nd) we checked Yakumo, Oshamanbe and Suttsu (where the above Osprey was taken).

2 Oystercatchers (scarce in Japan) at Yakumo, an Eastern Marsh Harrier at Yamazaki....................not much else though. 4 or 5 Osprey were fishing the rivermouth at Yakumo but I was alaways in the wrong place when they dived.

  1. Seems to me that any day with an Osprey is a good day.

    1. They are seemingly very common in Japan, a big difference from the UK at least (I don't know about Canada) where they are a rather scarce bird.

    2. In Canada the bird has made a terrific comeback from the dark days of organochloride poisoning and it is a common breeding species in our area now.

    3. Glad to hear it, a truly wonderful species.

  2. Mid summer is quiet here too as I'm sure you were reminded recently. It would be good to have access to Ospreys without travelling too far into Cummbria or Scotland.

That's a remarkably good picture Stu as it is pretty clear that the osprey is going at some speed.

    1. Hi Phil, I just caught the end of spring migration and as you are further north than Hokkaido there was still quite a lot happening.

Actually midsummer here is usually pretty interesting, still lots of stuff singing and displaying. This spring was early and mild though so everything seemed to happen sooner than normal this year.

Mid July to mid August is the graveyard shift for birding here.
