Long Toed Stint and other stuff..............

A Long Toed Stint at Yakumo this afternoon...............

There were a few waders on the pool in Yakumo..............3 Wood Sandpiper, several Little Ringed Plover, 1 Terek Sandpiper, 3 Snipe (not Lathams I think but I couldn't ID which species). 1 Common Sandpiper and 1 (or maybe 2) Long Toed Stint.

I'd only ever seen this species in autumn..............

Very unobtrusive................

It is aptly named.............

Lots of stuff around today................a female Falcated Duck amongst various duck species, a lone Brent Goose, Osprey, Wryneck, Pacific Swift, Great Egret.................

Red Cheeked Starlings were everywhere, perching atop filthy fishing gear to feast on the flies..................

Here is another very common bird in summer: Black Faced Bunting. Nice to get a male for a change..............

  1. Great pics as usual Stu, had a chat to a birder down at the beach this morning and he'd just seen Fulmar, Great skua, Pomerine skua and Red throated diver. I really must get a decent scope I think my bins are crap!!!

    1. Hi Derek, I haven't used a scope for ages..............just another thing to carry. It does make finding and IDing specs on the horizon easier though..............

  2. LT Stint is a fantastic little wader and the bunting is a subtle beauty.
I tend to still carry a scope through fear of missing something (e.g. a Pec Sand I only managed to ID from ultra zoomed in pics).
Sometimes I curse the photography - I seem stuck in a mediocre rut.

    1. I only have a budget 65mm Pentax scope............I often use my 500mm lens as an ID tool (record shot, look on the back of the camera at 100% zoom............surprisingly useful).

Your photos look fine to me, light and proximity to the subject seem to be a bigger problem in the UK than here in Japan so UK birders always operate under a bit of a handicap. No doubt I will notice this next week............
