Back to the mundane

No more eagle shots to post (but I'm going back this weekend weather permitting). I spent a bit of time exploring locally last week, a couple of hours here or there. 2 Whooper Swans on the river in Hakodate were a surprise, I'd never seen them in town before. Also around were Long Tailed Rosefinch, Hawfinch, afew Dusky Thrush, Tufted Duck and a pair of Goldeneye. Yunokawa had more ducks including Pochard and Wigeon as well as a lone Brent Goose.

The place where the trees have been cut down is now covered with markers: I'd reckon it looks like the river is going to be 'improved' (ie concreted to provide a way to use up tax yen). I will try and at least send an email to raise my concerns, whatever good that will do................

  1. Gosh I do hope they do not concert in the river, that would be terrible. Love the Whooper Swan. Have a lovely weekend.

    1. Hi Margaret, unfortunately in Japanese cities concrete is king.

  2. I suppose Whoopers are rather mundane but I can sit for an hour or more where I watch their interactions and listen to those wonderful sounds. Mind you we always have two, three or even four hundred at a time now, not just two.

    1. Hi Phil, we tend only to have smallish groups down in southern Hokkaido..................I've never seen more than 40 or 50 at one time around here and it's usually fewer than that.

  3. Those birds hardly sound mundane! A hawfinch would be very nice.

    1. I guess I was a bit spoiled by the eagles the previous week...............

Hawfinches are much much commoner here than in the UK. I've seen the grand total of 2 birds in the UK ever.
