Some late Waxwings

Some Japanese Waxwing this afternoon in the trees next to the local river, part of a flock of a dozen or so birds. Either the stragglers from the flocks I saw earlier in the winter or a small group of birds on their way north............

It was another mild very early spring day.....................

There was a lone Bohemian Waxwing in another tree acouple of hundred metres downstream.

The Japanese Waxwings were nibbling on some early spring growth, weird to see them eating something other than berries.

It was interesting to see both species as late as April. The Japanese Waxwings provided the bulk of today's photos though...............

The Crossbills were still in the park but very skittish.................I gave up after some kids came and started running around in the park (it's still the school holidays here).

  3. Some subtle but interesting differences between Bohemian and Japanese there Stu. Never saw a one this non-Waxwing winter.

    1. Hi Phil, the yellow belly and red tip on the tail on the Japanese Waxwing is diagnostic.

  9. 1 and 3 plus the taking off shot - top class. Very different to see them in a spring setting. As above, it has not been a Waxwing year here - too mild and a good berry crop on the continent.

  11. Your Waxwings are more colorful than our Cedar Waxwing, but otherwise the same. I have never seen a crossbill in anything but pictures. I am not sure if they are native to our area (Illinois). I think I will have to look that up. Your pictures are beautiful ... all of them.
