Another Sunday, another owl.

A bitterly cold Sunday afternoon with not much birding to be done in south Hokkaido. This Ural Owl posed well at least, a different one from a couple of posts ago.

At Sawara it was extremely windy but the harbour was birdeless except for a few Black Necked Grebe and various gulls. At Onuma there were the usual wildfowl and common woodland birds but nothing particularly interesting (except for the Owl).

The tame tits and nuthatches were grateful for the sunflower seeds again.

England are giving up the Ashes with hardly a whimper in the most spineless performance imaginable, I'm struggling to think of a more disppointing sporting campaign by a team I support in any sport anywhere ever (even football, and there have been many many disppointments there).

    1. Thanks Margaret, the owl was very close and the smaller birds were very tame......

  2. Great shots. I'd be very happy to see any of those birds at any time but you managed to get so close. I've given up on birding in Niigata this year. When the weather has been almost ok to go out I wasn't able to find or photograph anything. The owl looks so cosy. The Ashes is a real turnaround. There seems to be no middle ground between the two series.

  3. Another beauty ! And your last Tit and second Nuthatch photo are my favourites...

England have been shockingly bad so far. It's the 70s and the 90s all over again !

    1. I don't remember the 70s much but the 80s/90s were shocking at times, this series is right up there with the worst of those times.

  4. That poor owl looks half asleep! I enjoyed seeing the little ones too. We have to win sometimes!

    1. He was half asleep I think..............

I know these things go in cycles and fair enough Australia have shown themselves to be (by quite a margin) superior this time round but it's the lack of fight that's hard to take. I hope we don't have to wait another 16 years to get the urn back from you!

    2. We felt that way with the whitewash of the last tour in England! Blame Botham - apparently he said it would be 5 - nil!

    3. I gave up and stopped following it from yesterday but have just seen that England, amazingly, haven't actually lost yet. Does it rain much in Perth?

    4. NO - it would be our driest state capital!

    5. Oh well they'll just have to bat the rest of the day then..........

  5. The Owl looks great with the texture of the wood. I wish we had some nice tame tits and nuthatches - great opportunities to capture the character of these geat little birds.

    1. These tame ones keep coming to an ad hoc feeding area, they are just used to people I guess.
