Autumn still hanging on

A Varied Tit at Onuma yesterday. It was a very mild day with beautiful autumn sunshine, at Yakumoearlier in the day it was so mild I took off my down jacket AND fleece.

The eagles were mostly high in the sky, not a vintage day for pictures. These two were both taken with my new 1.4 teleconverter, my first shots with it.

Not much else around, a flock of Whooper Swans as well as still quite a few kittiwakes at the river mouth and the usual common ducks and gulls.

In Hakodate last week there were 2 Great Egrets on the river plus Goosander and Kingfisher. At Onuma today theer were lots of birds in the forest but the light was terrible. All 5 species of local woodpecker, flocks of Siskin, Crossbill, Hawfinch, Dusky Thrush and Japanese Waxwing were all high in the trees. Great Egrets are everywhere at the moment actually: Onuka, Kamiiso and Yakumo too. Earlier in the week Great Crested and Slavonian Grebe were in the harbour at Kamiisio. Today there were 3 Black Necked Grebe.

This young Glaucous Gull was one of several....................

At Moheji there were 2 Slavonian Grebe and 4 Brent Goose in the harbour.

I still haven't used my tripod yet with the 500 f4, maybe I should.......................holding it steady in the cold and the wind was a bit tricky and my arms start to hurt after a couple of hours lugging it around.

The Ashes. Oh dear. Well being better than the Australians at cricket was nice whilst it lasted.

I hope Michael Clarke breaks his" f***ing arm". Classy.

  1. Hi Stuart. It is wonderful that it is so mild with you still. You got great shots on this post. 2 different grebes and I loved the first bird.

  2. It's nice to see the Varied Tits again, especially in that warm autumn light. You certainly had a good day out with some very nice shots to show for it. It sounds as if you are giving us the Ashes back already!

  3. Love the colour and detail you captured of the steller in the tree. A pretty nice start with the TC.

    1. Thanks Russell, lots of eagles sitting in trees should give the TC a good work out this winter I hope.

  4. Yes Stuart, your performance with the camera is far better than England's performance with the bat.

  6. More good results with your new lens....both the Grebe species are interesting in winter plumage. Can't get enough Steller's Sea Eagles, either !
