The Bullfinches were still around on Thursday and I got a better look at this individual.
This is a different subspecies than the other male (in the previous post). The other male in the flock is the subspecies griseiventris which has dark pink cheeks. It is the common subspecies fround in Japan. As you can see this one is quite different.
This individual has a pink breast and is (I think) the the rosacea subspecies from Korea (or possibly cassinii from China).
I hope they have left some cherry blossoms to bloom this spring. Japan has territorial disputes with China and Korea, there are worries about pollution drifting across the Japan Sea from mainland China and now even the birds from mainland east Asia are destroying the sakura. Shintaro Ishihara would have a fit if he knew.

Excellent close-ups. Did you use a hide..? I got my first ever pics of a waxwing Thursday and today and it was sitting amongst the buds in the Cherry trees near my apartment. Not sure if it was destroying them though like this menace.

ReplyDeleteHad to go to your previous post to see the difference betweem them. This one is a handsome rose coloured fellow, isn't he! I think all the Bullfinches are beautiful though.Their cheeks were full to bursting on some of your captures.
I exspect/hope you will still have enough buds left for a lovely blossem display come spring.

DeleteFantastic set. Just read about the blossoms in the National Geographic - I noticed some special trees have wires etc to stop birds from landing on them and scoffing the buds!
ReplyDeleteHi Stuart, yes in some local parks they do just that but these are just a small row of trees next to a small river.........
