Wader Season #5

Wader season continues in south Hokkaido, this week is usually the peak..............

The Red Necked Stints were still on the same stretch of beach at Kamiso. They are surprisingly difficult to see sometimes and for non birding folk walking on the beach they are probably just about invisible..........

They were pretty tame. As you can see from this pic of my wife.........

There were also quite a few Grey Tailed Tattler around too........

The Tattlers and Stints are by far the commonest passage shorebirds but there are other species around too. Here's a crappy record shot of a Grey Plover, a local tick no less.

The only other wader species today was a Common Sandpiper. A few Harlequin Duck were around, the first of the winter visitors (even though it was a hot sultry day).

I fell asleep during the England game last night. I see Diego Maradonna is proving the rule that great players generally make crap coaches/managers. If I was a French/Portuguese fan I might start looking at alternative plans for next summer. Just watching the 2nd ODI, seems like a real anticlimax after the Ashes...........

  1. Excellent collection of wader photos from yesterday and today. Beautiful work. I've never seen someone get so close to waders. I missed out on the annual Toowoomba Bird Observers outing to Toorbul, Queensland to see waders yesterday and today (I went last year but didn't get closer than 40/50 metres) -I did glimpse a small one flying along the Shinano river yesterday. No idea what it was though. A rare sight here.

  2. Hi Russell, the closest I ever got to waders was at Cairns Esplanade, loads of them very close by. I hear the mudflats may have been developed since I was there in the mid 90's but there must still be a few good spots. Dunno how far that is from you though...........

  4. Hi Kevin, actually quite a lot of today's birds are probably on their way to Australia for a winter holiday of sun, surf and sand or whatever the shorebird equivalent is..........I envy them.

Except it must be an exhausting flight and they stand a good chance of dying before they get there. I don't envy them that bit.......

  6. Hi Horukuru, yes they were very close. They found my wife much more approachable than me for some reason........

Hi Kevin, I'm a veteran of 2 Oktoberfests (I used to live in Munich) and found that the only cure for such a hangover was time and sleep......but any excuse for a greasy salty breakfast is a good one. And Sunday morning, why not crack open a cold one? German style beer/American breakfast. Does it get any better than that?!?
